The CAIRNS service displays information in pages which have a standard layout. You will see the following displayed on every page, from top to bottom:
The area at the top of the page displays the CAIRNS service logo.
Opposite the CAIRNS service logo are links to services related to CAIRNS.
RCO: Use this link to connect to RCO, Research Collections Online. RCO gives subject strengths of many general research collections located in Scotland.
SCONE: Use this link to connect to SCONE, the Scottish Collections Network. SCONE gives collection-level descriptions for many collections located in, and about, Scotland.
SDDL: Use this link to connect to SDDL, the Scottish Distributed Digital Library. SDDL allows you to access collections of digital images, electronic texts, etc.
SLIR: Use this link to connect to SLIR, Scottish Libray and Information Resources Online. SLIR gives personal and organizational contact details for nearly every library located in Scotland.
Note that these links create new browser windows in the same way as the Help button, and we advise closing them as soon as you have finished using them, to avoid screen clutter.
Below the banner are links to information about the CAIRNS service.

Below the service information is a navigation bar, containing links for instant access to specific searches.

Click on this link to go to the CAIRNS Simple search page, which allows you to search for a title keyword in all the CAIRNS catalogues.
Click on this link to go to the Advanced search page, which allows you more choice in specifying a search.
Click on this link to go to the Miniclumps page, which allows you to choose sets of catalogues pre-selected for special types of search.
Click on this link to go to help in using the page.
All Help pages are displayed in new, separate browser windows so you can view the help information and the CAIRNS page at the same time.
You may have to close these new windows to reduce screen clutter. If you are using a full-screen browser window, you may not notice that new windows are being created. We suggest that you close Help windows as soon as you have finished using them, or minimise them if you need them for instant reference.
The page title describes the function of the page.
The area below the title bar is used to display information specific to the function of the page. This may include search input forms, display of search results, and display of information about specific collections.
Buttons which may appear in this part of the page include:
This button appears on search and selection pages. Click on this button to
display the results of a search or selection.
This button often appears on pages where you are prompted to enter information,
such as a search term. Click on this button to erase the contents of the entry
boxes so that you can start again from scratch.
This button appears on selection pages where you can reduce the number of
items listed by applying a limit or filter.
The area at the very bottom of the page.
